Genesis 12:3

“…and I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.”

This scripture is from Genesis, where God calls Abram to leave his country and go to a land where He will become blessed and become a great nation. The Lord promises that He will bless anyone that blesses him and curse anyone who curses him and that the families after Abram will be blessed. How amazing does that sound? Imagine God saying this to you.

To move to a completely different country must have been a daunting task for Abram and Sarai. They must have been used to their way of life and land, culture and routine. Where they were, was all that they had ever known. Has God ever told you do something entirely different to what you would have wanted to do? How did you feel about it? Did you obey what He asked you to do?

We must be set apart to be blessed. As Christians, we are not of the world. We are rejected by the world but God has set us apart so we can be blessed by Him. Abram’s move is a great example of this. He inspires us to take a step with the Lord and follow the plans that He has for us, even if we don’t truly understand what He is doing. God’s Word will never return onto Him void.

For every purpose He has set in our lives, He already knows the outcome and is with us all the way. Abram’s obedience to God, inspires us to live by faith and not sight. He couldn’t see the land that the Lord had promised, and he wouldn’t be alive to see all the families (or people) of the earth be blessed but he made a move and that was enough. Faith in God is not about leaning on our own understanding but trusting in God’s.

This scripture reveals God’s character of being a provider and protector. The Lord provides for Abram by giving him land and making his name great, which is evident in the three Abrahamic faiths (Christianity, Jewish and Islam) He also promises to protect Abram by blessing those who bless him and cursing those who curse him. What a mighty God we serve!

Abram teaches us that to receive our blessings, we must actively step out in faith.

Reflection questions:

Is God telling you to do something, but you’re worried about the outcome?

What do you need to leave behind so that you can walk in the blessings God has for you?

How will you step out in faith this coming week?

Prayer:

Lord, You are my provider and protector. For every promise that You have made for my life, You have made a way. I admit that I don’t always feel qualified for the promises You have for me, but I thank You for the story of Abram which inspires me. Help me not to cling to what I know when You have better things for me. I renounce anything that is hindering me from following Your instructions. Your guidance is always right and leads to peace and not confusion. Help me to be in tune with Your Word, step out in faith and trust You with the outcome. Your promises never fail or return to You void.

In Jesus’ name, amen.
